Cat Quest III

Released: Aug 8
Free ($19.99 to unlock full game)

It’s an action rpg with bright colors, an adorable cast, inventive gearing systems, and a goofy sense of humor. Though this is true of the previous two games, Cat Quest III feels like the best expression of these efforts.

Why you should play it

I can’t think of an action rpg I’ve played on mobile that feels so finely tuned to the realities of playing games on a smaller screen. Everything feels comfortable, zippy, and seamless, and all without feeling like anything is being taken away or sanded down. There’s a streamlining here that feels like it is core to the vision as opposed to some compromise.

Why you might not play it

The viewing angle of the game can look and feel a bit awkward at first, especially combined with playing an action game on a touch screen. Also, despite being a free-roam experience, you could be put off by wandering into a place with a level 200 boss at the start. If you don’t let that deter you and just explore the paths of least resistance, you’ll have a grand time.
