Arnold Rauers has quietly been making some of the very best mobile games for years now, and his latest, Maze Machina, is no exception. You are a mouse trapped in a deadly clockwork experiment, and you need to fight or otherwise outmaneuver mechanical foes in hopes of besting Automatron, the robotic overlord who watches your every move. The underlying game is a swipe-based roguelike that you'll want to play over and over again.

Why you should play it

Maze Machina feels like an evolution of Threes in the best way. It’s easy to learn, but you need to plan your movements carefully to actually reach the end. Even if you find yourself dying early in each run, there are four modes to test your skills in, all of which feel like their own unique challenge with new opportunities for you to improve your game.

Why you might not play it

For a mobile game, the tutorial is pretty long, but comprehensive. It guides you through each of the game’s twenty special items one stage at a time, which takes longer than most average runs. If you can stick with the game long enough to learn how it works for yourself though, you won’t be disappointed.
