The Greater Good

$3.99

The Greater Good is a role-playing game that harkens back to classics like Final Fantasy VII. You play as an amnesiac protagonist who is also a particularly gifted magic user. Your talents send you on an adventure full of ancient secrets, quippy companions, airships, and—of course—turn-based, menu-driven combat.

Why you should play it

This game is clearly a labor of love. Made by essentially one person, The Greater Good is an impressively sprawling adventure that carefully and thoughtfully pays homage to the games that inspired it while still retaining its own style and unique design. The result is a game that gives you all the best aspects of classic JRPG design while smartly trimming fat and streamlining things so the whole thing is delightfully palatable in a world of small screens and limitless gaming options.

Why you might not play it

If you don’t have an affinity for RPGs from the Playstation-era, The Greater Good may not hit you in the same way, but the game is charming enough that it can win you over if you let it. Given its old-school roots, you can only save your progress at prescribed locations, which could be a deal-breaker for anyone who needs a game they can hop out of at a moment’s notice.
